Li Ziqi is a legend. She lives in countryside of Mianyang 绵阳, Sichuan Province.

it is an absolute privilege to watch these.

I’VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH 李子柒 FOR THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS EVER SINCE MY FRIEND SHOWED ME HER VIDEOS AND I ADMIRE HER SO FUCKING MUCH

SHE’S SO INDEPENDENT AND STRONG AND HANDY AND BEAUTIFUL AND INTELLIGENT AND I FUCKING LOVE HER

But her backstory makes me love her EVEN more

李子柒 (Li Ziqi) was born in Sichuan in the countryside to a poor family. Her mom left the family when she was very young, and she was abused by her stepmom when her dad wasn’t around. After her father passed away, she ended up orphaned and living with her grandparents

She dropped out of middle school and moved to the city to look for work because her family was in such poverty. There, she worked as a waitress and a DJ for 8yr, making barely enough to get by — at one point, before she had found steady work, she was homeless and was forced to seek shelter under a bridge

Her grandfather was a professional chef, and after he passed away, she decided to try her hand at the culinary arts and to share her cooking skills on social media — she started making YouTube videos (entirely independently!!)

She initially received an incredible amount of backlash… people left hurtful comments and really just shat on her for no good reason

But she persevered and continued making videos, and now, she has 3.8 million followers (as of May 4th, 2019) and gets the bulk of her income from her YouTube channel

She isn’t completely alone in making her videos anymore (she has a cameraman and an assistant), but she still does the majority of the work — the actual cooking/farming/handiwork being filmed, arranging the scenes, and video editing

She is an absolute BADASS and carries on so many Chinese traditions that are being forgotten

Most of her videos are of her cooking, but she shows you more than just the cooking process — you see her pulling vegetables and herbs and mushrooms out of the fucking ground and slicing fruits and flowers and shit off of trees with a machete in the beginning of the video, and by the end, it’s a finished, beautiful, mouth-watering dish

She also does way more than work with food — there’s a video of her building her clay oven (which you see her cooking with in a lot of videos) from SCRATCH just with some bricks and a mud mixture she made herself

There’s also a video of her making paper from scratch and then using it for calligraphy, and LET ME TELL YOU, LI ZIQI IS AS ARTISTICALLY GIFTED AS SHE IS CULINARILY

Li Ziqi is a fucking boss and I love her and please watch her videos

LMAO CAN YOU FUCKING IMAGINE HAVING THE MONEY TO EAT LIKE THIS THO

The average price for chicken breast is around $3.20/lb

One pound of rice is maybe a dollar

Fresh broccoli is typically 2 bucks per pound

You can buy a 5-pound bag of russet potatoes for 3 dollars (about 60 cents/lb)

12 count eggs are around a dollar

You’re looking at maybe $10 without tax for more than one lunch meal, you could probably get at least 3 meals out of the list above (about $3.33 for each meal). That’s far from expensive.

Meat is the most expensive part of these meals and can be exchanged for cheaper meats.

Its cheaper when you buy from grocery stores

You guys just don’t know how to: take advantage of sales and coupons, spend according to a budget, and meal plan.

The meals shown above are nothing special, there are no expenive Super Foods. Theyre all just balanced meals, they all have fruit, vegetables, protein, grains, and some bit of fats

Byzantion and Constantinopolis were reborn under a third name. This name - the one that the great city still bears - betrays its timeless status as metropolis. What is the origin of ‘Istanbul’? It is the medieval Greek peasant’s answer to the typical question posed by a stranger anywhere near Constantinople. ‘Where does this road go? Where can I buy food and wine? Where will I find lodging tonight? The answer was is tin boli, ‘to the City, at the City’. This was, without rival, ‘the City’.

It broke 3 months ago. Last week I finally took the picture. For some reason I still can’t throw it out. Maybe it deserves a better shot.

When we say that the United States is joining Syria and Nicaragua by not participating in the Paris agreement, I think it’s not fair to leave it at that, because neither of them refused to sign for reasons anything like the selfish ones of the United States.

Syria was under sanctions making it complicated to even attend, and on top of that were embroiled in intense civil warfare and not in a great position to make a commitment like that. They didn't disagree with it, but were never involved with the deal in the first place.

Nicaragua actually felt that the Paris agreement was not strict enough, arguing that they didn’t want to be complicit in a voluntary effort that didn’t properly allocate the responsibility to large countries for being the ones who poisoned the environment in the first place, nor impose a punishment on anyone failing to comply with the standards. Nicaragua is one of the countries that’s most affected by climate change but least responsible, and they felt that wasn’t fairly reflected in the accord.

The United States is the ONLY country that has rejected the Paris accord because of the belief that our environment is less important than our profit. Even oppressive regimes and the poorest nations in the world are smarter than that, or at least know when to keep their mouths shut and play along. The USA is not really in the league of Syria or Nicaragua, but alone in the refusal to cooperate out of pure greed.

I checked and it’s true: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/05/31/why-nicaragua-and-syria-didnt-join-the-paris-climate-accord/?utm_term=.a36d3a0d88e7

Apparently Nicaragua is closing in on being 80%+ reliant on renewable energies which is one of the most impressive amongst nations, I believe I read somewhere.
